Tesla's new bot Takes Another Step Towards Robotics Future with Optimus Gen 2

Tesla recently unveiled the next generation of its humanoid robot, dubbed Optimus Gen 2. This updated robot features several noticeable improvements over the original prototype shown last year.

The Optimus Gen 2 is more lightweight at 10kg less than its predecessor, making it nimbler and enhancing mobility. It can walk 30% faster thanks to custom Tesla actuators and sensors optimizing movement. This version also sports upgraded hands with 11 degrees of freedom and tactile sensors, enabling delicate tasks like egg handling.

Additionally, Tesla gave Optimus Gen 2 more human-like feet with articulated toes and force/torque sensing for better balance and control. It has a two-degree-of-freedom neck as well allowing for more flexible head motions.

While still clearly a prototype, the Optimus Gen 2 represents meaningful progress towards Tesla’s ambitions in robotics. The improved speed, balance, and dexterity push the humanoid robot closer towards assisting with useful real-world applications one day.

However, many challenges remain before Tesla can produce and market Optimus at scale for customers. But the Optimus Gen 2 provides a sneak peek at the future where intelligent humanoid robots could take over repetitive and dangerous jobs to benefit humanity.
